At a glance
Billie Gene Body was preparing to enter the beauty market with a collection of fragrance-forward body oils, but its existing brand direction didn’t fully reflect the founder’s vision. I developed a comprehensive brand strategy to clarify its positioning, define its identity, and establish a cohesive direction for its future development.
The project
Billie Gene Body was preparing to enter the beauty market with a collection of fragrance-forward body oils and a distinct creative vision. After an earlier attempt at brand development failed to fully capture that vision, the founder needed a clearer strategic foundation. I developed a comprehensive brand strategy that defined the brand’s positioning, audience, messaging, and competitive differentiation, while establishing a cohesive direction for its visual identity, product storytelling, and future marketing.
The challenge
Finding a distinct voice in a crowded body care market
The body care category had become increasingly competitive, with established and emerging brands building their identities around clean ingredients, understated luxury, and wellness-inspired self-care.
Billie Gene Body had a different perspective. The founder envisioned a brand that embraced sensuality, indulgence, and the transformative power of fragrance. Its products were designed to make people feel confident and desirable, with provocative fragrance names and an expressive visual identity.
The challenge was translating that vision into a credible market position. The brand needed a clear understanding of its audience, a compelling reason for customers to choose its products, and a strategic framework that could guide future creative and commercial decisions.
The approach
Building a brand around the emotional power of fragrance
I began by examining the competitive landscape, studying how established and emerging body care brands positioned their products, communicated value, and connected with consumers. The research revealed an opportunity for Billie Gene Body to embrace a more provocative approach to beauty, positioning fragrance as a tool for confidence and self-expression.
From there, I developed a brand strategy centered on several key decisions:
Positioning: Establishing Billie Gene Body as a fragrance-first body care brand rooted in sensuality and accessible luxury.
Audience: Defining the customer’s emotional motivations, including the desire for self-expression, indulgence, and confidence.
Brand identity: Developing the mission, values, personality, and tone of voice to create consistency across brand communications.
Product storytelling: Connecting the debut fragrance collection to the broader brand narrative.
Creative direction: Establishing a visual and content direction inspired by provocative beauty imagery, early-2000s celebrity culture, and editorial storytelling.
The final strategy also included competitive analysis, market positioning, and recommendations for social media, email marketing, experiential activations, and the website experience.
The outcome
A strategic foundation for a brand with a distinct point of view
The engagement concluded with a comprehensive brand strategy deck that brought the founder’s vision into a cohesive framework for future development.
The strategy established Billie Gene Body’s competitive positioning, clarified its target audience, and defined how the brand should communicate across its products and marketing channels.
It also provided a creative reference for future brand development, connecting the product experience to a larger identity built around confidence, sensuality, and self-expression.
